Shopify Website Development Cost in 2026: Plans, Themes, Apps and Real Build Ranges

Shopify charges you $39 a month to start. The store itself costs more. In 2026, a theme-based Shopify store costs $5,000–$18,000 with a professional team, a custom theme with integrations $25,000–$75,000, and a Shopify Plus, B2B or headless build $75,000–$250,000+. Then come the monthly bills: plan, apps and payment fees. Below: how each part is priced, a calculator for your setup, and the point where Plus starts paying for itself.

Shopify website development cost at a glance

A Shopify budget has two halves. The one-time build: design, theme work, product data, apps setup, integrations, migration and QA. And the monthly run: the Shopify plan, app subscriptions and payment processing. Quotes usually show only the first half. Your bank statement shows the second.

A freelancer can set up a basic store on a premium theme for $1,000–$4,000. That works for a first test of demand. It rarely includes structured testing of checkout, taxes and shipping zones, which is where small stores quietly lose orders.

Shopify plans: what each one costs and when you need it

Shopify's 2026 US pricing, billed monthly: Basic $39, Grow $105, Advanced $399. Annual billing takes about 25% off (Basic $29, Grow $79, Advanced $299). Shopify Plus starts at $2,300 a month on a three-year term or $2,500 on a one-year term, and switches to a revenue-based fee (0.35–0.40% of sales, depending on term) once monthly sales pass roughly $800,000.

Basic$392.9% + 30¢2%Full store, unlimited products, basic reports
Grow$1052.7% + 30¢1%More staff accounts, better reports, lower card rate
Advanced$3992.5% + 30¢0.6%Custom reports, international pricing per market, more staff, lower rate
Plusfrom $2,300from 2.25% + 30¢0.2%Checkout customization, unlimited B2B catalogs, custom Functions, expansion stores, higher API limits, launch support

Two 2025–2026 changes matter for budgets. First, Shopify opened core B2B features to every paid plan: Basic, Grow and Advanced now get company profiles, payment terms, volume pricing and up to three B2B catalogs. Unlimited customer-specific catalogs, deposits and partial payments stay on Plus. A wholesaler with a handful of price lists no longer needs Plus by default.

Second, checkout customization moved to Checkout Extensibility. Shopify retired checkout.liquid for the information, shipping and payment pages in August 2024 and for the thank-you and order status pages in August 2025. Custom checkout steps, fields and UI blocks now mean checkout UI extensions and Shopify Functions, and the deeper checkout UI work is a Plus feature. If a vendor quotes "custom checkout" on Advanced, ask exactly what they mean.

When does Shopify Plus pay for itself?

On fees alone, Plus costs $1,901 a month more than Advanced and saves about 0.25% on every online card sale. That's break-even near $760,000 in monthly online card sales, close to the point where Plus switches to its revenue-based fee anyway. Below that line, the upgrade needs a feature reason.

Shopify Plus vs Advanced: extra cost per month Plan fee difference ($2,300 vs $399) minus card-rate savings (2.25% vs 2.5%), US online card sales +$2,000 +$1,000 $0 −$1,000 $0 $200k $400k $600k $800k Monthly online card sales Break-even ≈ $760k / month Below it, upgrade only for features Plus costs more Plus costs less
Fee math only. It ignores apps you can drop on Plus, launch support, and the revenue-based fee above roughly $800k a month. Rates as published for 2026; Plus card rates can be negotiated.

In practice, the features decide it: a checkout that has to collect extra data or run custom logic, many B2B price lists, several regional stores, or integrations that hit standard API limits. When we review a store that's considering Plus, about half the "we need Plus" reasons turn out to be solvable on Advanced with a Function, a B2B catalog or a better app.

Themes vs custom: where the build money goes

The biggest single decision in a Shopify build is how far you move away from a theme. Every step adds design and front-end hours now and makes every later change more expensive.

$300–$450 for the theme, 20–60 hours of setup. Most premium themes on the Shopify Theme Store sell for about $300–$450 one-time. Setup covers brand styling, navigation, collections, filters, product templates, policies and checkout settings. Good fit for new brands, catalogs under a few hundred products and stores still testing what sells.

60–200 hours on top of a premium theme. The product page, cart, header and home page are redesigned and rebuilt as custom sections, while the rest of the theme stays intact. You keep most of the theme's update path. This is the sweet spot for most growing stores: distinct look where shoppers decide, standard everywhere else.

250–500 hours including design. A theme built from scratch in Liquid from your own UX/UI design. Full control of performance and merchandising, but no theme vendor shipping updates: new Shopify features (and Online Store 2.0 sections) are yours to add. Makes sense for brands with strong design needs or product types themes handle badly.

700–1,500+ hours. A separate front end (Shopify's Hydrogen framework on React, hosted on Oxygen, or Next.js elsewhere) talks to Shopify through the Storefront API. Fast, flexible, and content-friendly, but you rebuild things themes give for free, and many apps that inject into themes won't work without extra development. Rarely right below eight figures in annual revenue.

Typical split we see in estimates for a custom-theme Shopify store. Theme-based builds shift weight to setup and data; headless builds shift it to front end.

Design spend is worth it at the checkout path. Baymard Institute puts average documented cart abandonment at about 70%. Shopify's own checkout is already well tuned, so on Shopify the money is better spent on the product page, the cart and the speed of everything before checkout.

Choose your plan, design approach and the apps you expect to run. The model uses planning hours from real estimates, adds 25% for QA and project management, and applies the regional rate you pick. It also shows the monthly run cost, which is the number most Shopify quotes leave out.

Rates are typical 2026 vendor rates for mid-to-senior Shopify developers. Plan prices are billed monthly (annual billing is about 25% cheaper on Basic to Advanced). Maintenance is 17.5% of the build cost per year. Payment processing, theme purchase and paid apps beyond this list are not included. Email and SMS tools scale with list size, so large lists cost more.

Two things show up when you play with it. Switching from a customized premium theme to a fully custom theme roughly doubles the build. And for Basic and Grow stores, apps often cost more each month than the Shopify plan itself.

Apps: the monthly line nobody budgets for

The Shopify App Store lists roughly 18,000 to 25,000 apps in 2026, depending on which tracker you trust. That's the platform's strength: almost any feature exists as a subscription. It's also how stores end up paying for 20 apps, half of them installed for a campaign two years ago.

Typical monthly app spend by store stage

New store, 4–6 apps$50–150
Growing D2C, 8–12 apps$200–500
Established brand, 12–20 apps$500–1,500
Plus store, 15–30 apps incl. enterprise tools$1,500–5,000+
Ranges we see in store reviews and estimates in 2026. Email and SMS marketing, subscriptions, search and helpdesk tools make up most of the spend; reviews and small utilities are cheap.
  • Apps scale with you. Many charge by orders, contacts or revenue. An email tool that costs $45 at 1,000 contacts can cost several hundred at 50,000.
  • Apps cost speed. Each storefront app can add scripts. A Deloitte study for Google ("Milliseconds Make Millions", 2020) found a 0.1-second improvement in mobile site speed lifted retail conversion by 8.4%. We often find slow Shopify stores running scripts from apps that were uninstalled long ago.
  • Custom can be cheaper. When an app costs $300 a month and does one narrow thing, a small private app or a Shopify Function built for $3,000–$8,000 can pay back within two years, and you own it.
  • Plus doesn't remove apps. It replaces a few (scripts for discounts, some B2B tools, wholesale apps), but Plus stores usually run more enterprise-tier apps, not fewer.

South / Southeast Asia (~$35/h)$28k
Midpoint of the calculator range: custom theme, 100–1,000 products, WooCommerce migration, two custom features, one integration. US labor costs explain most of the gap: the BLS put the median US web developer wage at $92,650 in May 2025, before benefits and agency margin.
  • US onshore: full overlap and easy workshops with your marketing team. Highest cost per hour.
  • Latin America: what US buyers call nearshore, with most of the working day shared. Rates close to Central Europe. Our nearshore rates guide has per-country numbers.
  • Central & Eastern Europe (Gilzor works from Poland and Cyprus): offshore for the US, with about 2–4 shared hours with the East Coast on a shifted schedule and little with the West Coast. Works well for Shopify builds because most of the work is written: tickets, designs, staging links, recorded walkthroughs.
  • South and Southeast Asia: lowest rates and the widest quality spread. Budget more of your own time for review.

What we see in estimates and first calls

  • "Just a Shopify store" hides the integration. The theme is rarely the risk. The risk is "stock should sync with our warehouse" without anyone deciding which system owns stock, prices and order status. We ask that per field before we estimate. Our API integration cost guide has the general math.
  • Theme code edits block updates. Many stores we inherit have a premium theme with hundreds of direct code edits. The theme vendor ships improvements; the store can't take them without a week of merging. Building changes as separate sections avoids this.
  • App bloat is the most common speed problem. When a Shopify store is slow, we usually find 15+ storefront apps, leftover scripts from removed apps, and oversized images. Fixing that is cheaper than a redesign and is often the first job in a tech troubleshooting engagement.
  • Migrations break on customers and subscriptions, not products. Products import easily. Customer accounts (who must reactivate), subscription contracts with saved payment methods, gift card balances and URL redirects are where launches slip.
  • Plus gets bought before it's needed. We regularly see stores paying $2,300 a month for Plus while using none of its features. The reverse happens too: a store bending Advanced with four apps to fake a checkout rule that Plus would handle cleanly.
  • Overruns come from unwritten scope. A 2012 McKinsey and University of Oxford study of large IT projects found an average 45% budget overrun. Shopify builds are smaller, but the cause is the same: B2B rules, tax edge cases and "like our old site" requirements that surface mid-project.

How to reduce the cost without breaking the store

  1. Write the scope before collecting quotesPlan, catalog size, markets, apps you already use, integrations and which system owns which data. Quotes become comparable, and vendors stop padding for uncertainty. For larger stores, a short business analysis phase does this properly.
  2. Customize a premium theme instead of building oneRebuild the product page, cart and header as custom sections. Leave the rest to the theme and keep its update path.
  3. Start on the lowest plan that fitsGrow covers most new stores. Move to Advanced for international pricing or the lower card rate, and to Plus when a feature or the fee break-even says so.
  4. Replace expensive single-purpose apps with small custom codeAnything above roughly $150 a month that does one narrow job is a candidate for a private app or a Function.
  5. Launch with one integrationAutomate the flow that saves the most manual work, usually fulfillment. Add the rest when order volume justifies it.
  6. Choose the team region that fits how you workIf your team works from tickets and async updates, an offshore team saves 50–75% against US rates. If you need daily live sessions, the overlap is worth paying for.
Don't cut these

Checkout and tax testing for every shipping zone and payment method. 301 redirects from every old URL during migration. A test or development store for changes. Someone responsible for app and theme updates after launch. Each costs little up front; skipping them costs orders and rankings. Structured QA on the purchase path pays for itself in the first month.

Shopify vs other platforms on cost

Shopify is usually the cheapest platform to run for a small to mid-size D2C store, because hosting, security and checkout are included. It gets more expensive than self-hosted options when apps pile up or when card fees on high volume outweigh the convenience. For WordPress-based stores, compare with our WooCommerce development cost guide; for large catalogs and complex B2B, the Magento development cost guide; and for a side-by-side of all options including custom platforms, the ecommerce website development cost overview. FAQ

How much does a Shopify website cost in 2026?
With a professional team, a theme-based Shopify store costs about $5,000–$18,000, a store with a custom theme and a few integrations $25,000–$75,000, and a Shopify Plus, B2B or headless build $75,000–$250,000 or more. On top of that you pay the Shopify plan ($39–$399 a month, or from $2,300 on Plus), app subscriptions and payment processing every month.
How much does a Shopify developer charge per hour?
In 2026, US onshore Shopify agencies usually bill $120–$200 an hour, Latin American nearshore teams $45–$75, Central and Eastern European teams $45–$70, and South or Southeast Asian teams $25–$45. Freelancers on marketplaces range from $25 to $150. The rate matters less than whether the team includes QA and someone who owns the scope.
Is Shopify Plus worth the cost?
On card fees alone, Plus pays for itself only around $760,000 in monthly online card sales, because its published US online card rate (2.25% + 30¢) is just 0.25 points lower than Advanced. Most merchants who upgrade earlier do it for features: checkout customization, unlimited B2B catalogs, custom Shopify Functions, expansion stores and higher API limits. If you need none of those, Advanced is usually the better deal.
Should I buy a premium theme or build a custom Shopify theme?
Start with a premium theme ($300–$450 one-time on the Shopify Theme Store) unless your brand or product presentation genuinely needs something themes cannot do, such as a product configurator or unusual merchandising. A custom theme costs $15,000–$60,000 more and needs a developer for every future change. Many stores get 80% of the value by customizing the product page, cart and header of a premium theme.
How much do Shopify apps cost per month?
Most single-purpose apps cost $10–$100 a month; subscriptions, loyalty, advanced search and helpdesk apps often run $50–$500 as you grow, and email and SMS marketing tools scale with your list size. A typical store we review runs 6–15 apps and spends $150–$800 a month. Check for apps you no longer use: removing them saves money and usually speeds up the store.
How long does it take to build a Shopify store?
A theme-based store takes 2–6 weeks, a custom theme with integrations 2–4 months, and a Plus, B2B or headless build 4–8 months. Product data, migration from another platform and third-party integrations are what usually stretch the timeline, not the design.

Where Gilzor fits

We build, fix and extend Shopify stores as part of our e-commerce and web development work: custom sections and themes, private apps and Functions, integrations, and QA on the same team. Only 5% of the tasks we send to QA come back to developers; that's our own metric. For US clients, we work from Poland and Cyprus with a few shared hours on East Coast time and written, async-first reporting.

If you have a quote or an app list, send it over. We'll tell you whether the number is realistic, which apps you can drop, and whether you need Plus yet.
